Health(y) IT - Mobile computing in healthcare
Wednesday 18st June 18:30 BCS, 5
Southampton Street, London WC2
The NHS and wider healthcare sector is changing rapidly - new
government initiatives will take care closer to patients homes. The setup of
Super GP surgeries, Polyclinics and the possibility to remotely monitor and
manage chronic diseases will without doubt change the way care is provided to patients as
well as to the support given to carers and relatives in the future. The one size fits all
approach will be replaced with care plans, setup individually for the needs and
requirements of each individual client.
Questions are being raised whether the current
provision of Information Technology within the National Programme for IT in the NHS will
cope with these changes. Providing care within the community is challenging traditional
thinking of information generation, collection and storage within health informatics and
can the IT industry keep up with the pace of challenges to make relevant medical data
accessible wherever the care is needed.
This event will discuss what the main drivers and
requirements are to provide safe and sound information for the care of patients in a
hospital and community setting? What technology is available to allow doctors and nurses
to have the correct medical information and knowledge available independent from the
location of the patient? We will also discus how patients be involved in helping to create
a personal care record that ultimately leads to a single patient record?

e-Books
Wednesday 21st May 18:15 BCS, 5
Southampton Street, London WC2
The humble book seems to be holding its own against its digital
equivalents, in a way that say 35 mm film and the CD have not. Is this really the case, if
so why and what does the future hold for the e-book?
How is the e-book format being used
to innovate, e.g. linking to other media? Is the Turning Pages technology still holding
its own against other e-Book formats? What did the collaboration between the British
Library and Microsoft do for e-Books?
Do readers like e-books? Is non-fiction as
successful as fiction? How do publishers and authors protect their copyright?
Are e-Books
widely used in education? Will the JISC National e-Books Observatory Project, provide any
answers with its study on the use and impacts of e-content in Higher Education?
Will
devices such as Amazons recently-released Kindle lead to increased take up? Is there
a standard for e-books and e-book readers?
What does the future hold, e.g. for library
collections and content preservation?
Our expert presenters were:
- PETER BLANCHARD Managing Director of Libresco Ltd and Agent and Distributor in
the UK and Eire For iRex Technologies Bv
- CLIVE IZARD Head of Creative Services, British Library

ITs Going Going.. Going Green!
Wednesday 20th February 18:15
BCS, 5 Southampton Street, London WC2
This event was in association with SUPINFO
The International Institute of Information Technology
Is there a black-and-white blueprint for the future?
Global warming,
climate change, times running out. At last were much more focused on Green
issues - in the news at least. And IT has a major role to play in helping to shape our
future, and the future shape of our home planet. At this event well consider views
on green issues and ideas such as reducing carbon footprints, increasing mobile computing,
using energy-efficient hardware and networks, developing virtual computing, recycling
unwanted PCs, printing less paper copies of electronic information. Is the key not
just to invest in green products, but to be more efficient - and more coordinated?
Is
a multi-faceted approach needed for effects on the environment to be felt? Does the design
of technology and organisations need to change? Where are we now, and what do we need to
do to accelerate change? Do we need to be more lean and mean about green? And more
coordinated, locally, nationally, globally?
